Apple’s lineup changed in September 2026. The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max replaced last year’s Pro models, the foldable iPhone Duo is about to ship, and Apple raised prices by $100 on every older model it still sells. There is no standard iPhone 18 yet. That makes picking the right iPhone harder than usual, so we compared every model Apple sells on what actually decides a purchase: camera, battery, performance, size, software support and price per year of use.

Best iPhones Reviewed
1. iPhone 18 Pro
Best iPhone Overall • Best Camera • Best for GamingWhy we recommend it: The 18 Pro is the first Pro iPhone in years whose headline change affects how photos are taken rather than only how they are processed. Its 48MP main camera can switch between four apertures (f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0), so it can gather more light at night or keep a whole group sharp in daylight. Apple pairs it with a 2nm A20 Pro chip, a vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the last one, and a quicker 60W-class wired charge to roughly 50% in about 15 minutes.
- Variable aperture plus manual controls (shutter speed, white balance, histogram)
- Better sustained performance: Apple claims up to 40% over the 17 Pro
- 48MP ultrawide and 4x telephoto, plus ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2 video
- Same compact 6.3-inch size as before; storage up to 2TB
- $100 price rise to $1,199
- Siri AI is still in beta and varies by language and region
- Battery rating (36 hrs) trails the Pro Max by a wide margin
Best for: photographers, mobile gamers, video creators and anyone who keeps phones for four or more years. Skip it if: you mostly message, browse and stream. The iPhone 17 does that for $300 less.
2. iPhone 18 Pro Max
Best Battery LifeWhy we recommend it: The Pro Max shares the 18 Pro’s chip, cameras and display technology, so the choice is about screen size and stamina. Apple rates it at up to 45 hours of video playback on US eSIM-only models, the longest figure the company has given any iPhone, and the 6.9-inch panel suits video, documents, editing and gaming. In the US, teardowns have shown the Pro Max uses a Qualcomm modem rather than Apple’s new C2, so compare modem notes if cellular performance matters to you.
- Best endurance in Apple’s lineup
- Biggest iPhone screen (non-foldable)
- Identical camera system to the 18 Pro
- 249g is hard to use one-handed and heavy in a pocket
- Starts at $1,299
Best for: long travel days, creators editing on the go. Skip it if: you want a compact phone; the 18 Pro gives you the same camera in a lighter body.
3. iPhone 17
Best iPhone for Most PeopleWhy we recommend it: Last year’s iPhone 17 closed most of the gap to the Pro line: a 6.3-inch ProMotion display up to 120Hz, a 48MP main camera plus a 48MP ultrawide, an 18MP front camera, and 256GB of base storage. After the September price rise it costs $899, still $300 below the 18 Pro, and it runs iOS 27 like every current model. For messaging, social media, photos, streaming and light gaming, little is lost.
- Smooth 120Hz screen at a mainstream price
- Dual 48MP cameras and a strong selfie camera
- Light at 177g; roughly 30 hours of rated video playback
- No telephoto lens
- A19 is older than the A20 Pro and is not tuned for heavy sustained loads
- Price went up $100 in September
Best for: students, families, first-time iPhone buyers. Skip it if: zoom and manual camera controls matter, or if you want the newest chip.
4. iPhone Air
Best Ultra-Light DesignWhy we recommend it: The Air trades camera hardware and battery for a titanium body that is only about 5.6mm thick and weighs around 165g, lighter than the 6.3-inch iPhone 17 despite a larger 6.5-inch screen. It uses the A19 Pro chip, but it has a single 48MP camera and a lower battery rating (about 27 hours of video playback) than every other model here. That is a deliberate design bet, and it is worth it only if comfort and looks outweigh endurance.
- Remarkably light and thin with a big display
- Pro-class A19 Pro chip
- One rear camera, no ultrawide or telephoto
- Shortest battery rating of the premium models
- $1,099 is more than the better-equipped iPhone 17
Best for: people who carry their phone all day and value feel and style. Skip it if: you shoot a lot of photos or video or need all-day endurance.
5. iPhone 17e
Best Budget • Best CompactWhy we recommend it: The 17e is the cheapest way into current iPhone software: an A19 chip, a 6.1-inch OLED display, a 48MP camera, 256GB of storage, and, for the first time on an “e” model, 15W MagSafe charging. Independent reviewers note that its camera sensor is much smaller than the iPhone 17’s, so low-light shots are where you will notice the difference. At $699 after the price rise, the gap to the iPhone 17 is only $200, which is worth thinking about.
- Lowest price, MagSafe included, 256GB base storage
- Compact and one-hand friendly at about 170g
- Older notch design and no 120Hz ProMotion
- Single camera with a smaller sensor
- eSIM only; no physical SIM
Best for: first phones, backup phones, small-hand users. Skip it if: you can stretch to the iPhone 17, which gives a better screen and second camera.
6. iPhone Duo
Most Advanced • Preview (on sale October 23)Why it is on the list: The Duo is Apple’s first foldable: a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer display, a titanium frame, an A20 Pro chip and two 48MP rear cameras. Apple rates it at up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen and 44 on the outer. At $1,999 it costs $800 more than the 18 Pro, and that money buys the hinge, second display and dual battery, not extra camera power (it has no telephoto). It also brings back Touch ID in place of Face ID.
- Tablet-size screen that fits in a pocket
- Same A20 Pro chip as the 18 Pro
- IP68 rating and Apple Pencil support promised for later
- Not the lightest or thinnest foldable at 254g folded
- Long-term hinge and crease durability is unproven
- Costs $800 more than the 18 Pro
*Provisional score from announced specs and early hands-on coverage. We will update it after a full review period.
Camera Comparison
Megapixels are no longer the story. All current iPhones use 48MP sensors; the difference is aperture control, sensor size and lens choice.
| iPhone | Main camera | Zoom | Notable feature | Independent test finding |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 Pro / Pro Max | 48MP, variable f/1.48–f/4.0 | 4x telephoto + 2x crop | Manual aperture, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 | DXOMARK (18 Pro): overall 172, second globally. Low light 150 and video 176 are the highest scores it lists. Telephoto (143) is a weak spot. |
| 17 | 48MP + 48MP ultrawide | 2x crop | Dual capture, 18MP front | Not independently scored in the sources we checked. |
| Air | Single 48MP | 2x crop | Lightweight; 18MP front | Not independently scored in the sources we checked. |
| 17e | Single 48MP f/1.6, OIS | 2x crop | Smaller sensor than 17 | PhoneArena: main sensor is about half the size of the iPhone 17’s, so expect weaker low-light shots. |
| Duo | 48MP + 48MP ultrawide | 2x crop | Outer-screen selfie preview | On sale October 23; full camera tests not published yet. |
Camera findings above come from DXOMARK and PhoneArena lab tests, not our own photos. Add your own matched sample images here once you have shot them, with captions and descriptive alt text.
Battery Comparison
Apple’s ratings measure video playback under lab conditions. They are useful for ranking models against each other, not for predicting your day. The Pro Max leads by a clear margin, while the Air and 17e sit at the bottom.
| iPhone | Apple video rating | Fast charging | Wireless | Independent web-browsing test* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 Pro Max | Up to 45 hrs | ~50% in 15 min (60W+) | MagSafe/Qi2 25W | 18:27 (Tom’s Guide) |
| 18 Pro | Up to 36 hrs | ~50% in 15 min (60W+) | MagSafe/Qi2 25W | 16:17 (Tom’s Guide) |
| Duo | 31 hrs inner / 44 hrs outer | ~50% in 20 min | Check Apple spec | Not yet tested (on sale Oct 23) |
| 17 | Up to 30 hrs | Fast charge supported | MagSafe | 12:47 (Tom’s Guide) |
| Air | Up to 27 hrs | Fast charge supported | MagSafe | 12:02 (Tom’s Guide) |
| 17e | Up to 26 hrs | ~50% in 30 min (20W) | MagSafe 15W | 12:35 (Tom’s Guide) |
*Tom’s Guide battery test: continuous web browsing over 5G at 150 nits until the phone shuts down (hours:minutes). Other labs get different totals but the same order: GSMArena measured 19:20 “Active Use” for the 18 Pro Max, and Consumer Reports measured 48.5 hours in its own test. The 18 Pro Max also charged from 0 to 100% in 55 minutes in GSMArena’s test.
Performance & Gaming
The A20 Pro (18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, Duo) is a 2nm chip with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU with ray tracing and a 32-core Neural Engine. Apple promised up to 20% faster CPU and 40% faster GPU performance. Independent testing found larger jumps in some benchmarks: Tom’s Guide measured about 4,735 single-core and 12,800 multi-core in Geekbench 6 for the 18 Pro, against 3,834 and 9,988 for the 17 Pro, and Macworld found the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme test about 93% faster. Sustained performance is a more modest story, because every phone throttles under long load, and results vary by lab. The A19-based iPhone 17 and 17e are still fast enough for any current game on normal settings.
| iPhone | Geekbench 6 (single / multi) | 3DMark Wild Life Extreme stress stability* | Takeaway |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 Pro Max | 4,741 / 12,789 | 79.4% | Best sustained performance of the group, helped by its larger body |
| 18 Pro | 4,735 / 12,800 | 62.8% | Same peak speed; holds up like last year’s Pro Max under long load |
| 17 Pro (last year) | 3,834 / 9,988 | 61.1% | Reference point for upgraders |
*Higher means less slowdown over a 20-minute stress run. Source: Tom’s Guide benchmarks. GSMArena measured a lower 48% for the 18 Pro in its own run, so treat stability numbers as ranges, not fixed values. We did not find comparable published scores for the iPhone 17, Air, 17e or Duo.

iPhone Prices & Where to Buy
On September 9, 2026, Apple raised the price of every older iPhone it still sells by $100. Analysts had expected increases on the new Pro models because of rising memory costs, but the hikes on older models surprised many. The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max have been dropped from Apple’s own store, though some carriers and retailers may still stock them.
| Model | Apple US price (256GB) | Change |

Compare Apple, Amazon, Best Buy and carriers. Carrier “free phone” offers usually need a new line, a trade-in and a multi-year plan, so check the bill credits before you buy. Prices checked: October 2026. Prices outside the US differ; the iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India.

The 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max, thanks to the A20 Pro and the larger vapor chamber. The iPhone 17 is plenty for casual gaming.

Which iPhone is the best value?
The iPhone 17 at $899 for most buyers, and the iPhone 17e at $699 if budget matters more than screen quality.

Should you buy now or wait for the standard iPhone 18?
Reports say the standard iPhone 18, an 18e and a second-generation Air are expected in spring 2027, but Apple has not confirmed this. If you need a phone now, the current models are good buys; if you want the cheapest new-generation chip, waiting may be worth it.

How scores work
Each iPhone gets six category scores out of 10: design, display, camera, performance, battery and value. The overall score is our editorial judgment of those six, weighted toward what matters most for the phone’s target buyer, so it is not a simple average.
Where labs disagree
Different labs use different battery and benchmark methods. When numbers conflict, we show a range or name the lab and do not pick the most flattering one.

Final Verdict
Buy the iPhone 18 Pro if you want the best phone Apple makes at a reasonable size. Pick the iPhone 18 Pro Max for battery and screen. Most people will be better served by the iPhone 17, which delivers a smooth display and dual cameras for $899. Take the iPhone 17e on a tight budget, the iPhone Air if weight and style matter most, and consider the iPhone Duo only if you want to be an early adopter of a $1,999 foldable.
